Cabinet Member
draws line under Public Convenience closures
Conwy’s Cabinet Member for
Environment, Cllr Mike Priestley has announced that he does not intend to
compulsorily close any public conveniences in the county
borough.
The extensive consultation with
communities over a number of years attracted much debate and interest from the
public.
Cllr Mike Priestley said: “The
review of our service was never about saving money, we aimed to improve the
service by spending money from closed facilities on refurbishing others. But,
during the consultation many people have said that they would rather have a
basic facility than none at all.”
With this in mind Cllr Mike
Priestley has consulted with the Council Leader, cabinet colleagues and Senior
Executive Team and announced that Conwy’s existing public conveniences will
remain open.
He added: “Our budget will not
extend to significant refurbishment or improvement of any of these facilities,
and I must stress that if any are vandalised or damaged we may not have the
funds to repair them and they may be closed until money is
available.
“However, I’m still committed to
working with Town & Community Councils, local groups and businesses to look
at opportunities to improve the service, whether by transferring responsibility
or contribution to running costs.”
In support of the
decision Cllr Phil Edwards, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I very much
welcome this announcement for our communities. The issue has been debated at
great length and this decision today will set all our minds at rest. It will be
warmly welcomed I'm sure by our residents, businesses and the many thousands of
people who visit our beautiful county."
